Revel’s “Bolero” is one of the most recognized pieces of orchestral music. Choreographer, Duane Cyrus asked me to design the costumes for his dancers from the University of Arizona’s School of Dance in a performance with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (Conducted by Maestro Jose Luis Gomez) of Revel’s iconic orcehstration. I was excited to create a new vision for Revel’s timeless masterpiece, Inspired by the bold, graphic aesthetics of Martha Graham. I imagined the dancers as an ancient culture captured in a ritual of movement.

"EMBARQUED" made it’s New York City premier at BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music in November 2022. It is the brainchild of Jerome Robbins Award winning choreographer, Stefanie Batten Bland for her dance ensemble COMPANY SBB. This dance piece is an abstract exploration of The African American Freedom Trail on Martha's Vineyard... the Middle Passage...the Transatlantic Slave Trade...human migrations... displaced bodies... searching and surviving. Stefanie charged me with designing convertible costumes fashioned as ship sails that the dancers use to create a sea vessel. The sails are dismounted from the ship’s mast and worn as cloaks. Then the ships rigging become flag poles as their robes transform into banners manipulated in a ceremonial gesture. Photos by Maria Baranova @photo_by_baranova

As part of Duke Performances’ virtual fall season, Choreographer, Stefanie Batten Bland’s dance film CURRENT explores a new work created for camera. Working from upstate NY, through river tributaries, Batten Bland marshals an intimate configuration of her company to explore underlining historical and present day directional up/ downstate tensions in the region during the pandemic. CURRENT presented a unique design opportunity to create costumes that would be filmed in various biospheres. The costumes had to work aesthetically on land and in the water.

Stefanie Batten Bland’s dance theatre piece dives deep into core personal life thematics. With whom does society deem it appropriate to be intimate? To share our lives with? Inspired by the 1967 Stanley Kramer film starring Sydney Poitier, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, the work pays tribute to those who paved the way toward acceptance in love and life. Set around a transformative dinner setting, seven dance-theatre artists excavate interlaced universal traumas through imagery and ritual as they seek a seat at the table.
